Domestic Tourism

Low Turn of Domestic Tourism

Domestic tourism in Uganda has taken a hit due to the Covid19 pandemic. The travel restrictions and closures of businesses have had a significant impact on the tourism industry. Meanwhile, domestic tourism being the most affected.

Uganda has long been a popular tourist destination, boasting some of the most spectacular natural beauty in East Africa. From the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains and the lush jungles of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Moving on to the vast savannah of Murchison Falls National Park. And the famous Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda has something for everyone.

However, due to the pandemic, domestic tourism in Uganda has dropped significantly. Many of the popular tourist destinations have been closed due to the health and safety restrictions imposed by the government. This has led to a decrease in the number of visitors to these areas. And this has had a major impact on the local economy.

Mr. Muyingo  Hassan Bin Umar the Director Umarsacs Rides Uganda Ltd and Umarsacs School of Tourism And Hospitality. Has therefore noted that: ”Tour Operators need to sell their unique packages to Country residents at affordable rates. Which will in the long run fascinate them into tours and travel”

The lack of visitors has also had a negative effect on the local businesses that rely on tourism for their income. Hotels, restaurants, and tour operators are all feeling the pinch due to the lack of domestic tourists.

Measures being taken to solve this issue.

The government of Uganda has taken a number of steps to revive domestic tourism. These include offering incentives for domestic travel, introducing special packages, carrying out travel group campaigns with Explore Uganda the Pearl of Africa Brand https://caninesafarisug.com/2023/04/17/discover-the-wonders-of-west-taking-part-in-the-explore-west-domestic-tourism-campaign/  for creation awareness. However,  Mr. Steven Nathan Mukalazi the Operations Lead Young Uganda Tour Operators (YUTO), benchmarked poor performance of tourism & wildlife clubs in schools/higher Educational Institutions. And this has led  to no travel mindset in kids when in adulthood.

WITH THE FACT THAT WE AS OPERATORS MAKE A UNIQUE DISCIPLINE IN SELLING OUR DOMESTIC PACKAGES TO OUR CLIENTS WITHIN, SURELY WE WILL BE SOMEWHERE IN DOMESTIC TOURISM.

KINDLY THIS GOES TO SCHOOL, PARTICIPATE MUCH BETTER IN WILDLIFE CLUBS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BEFORE EVEN LETTING STUDENTS GO IN FIELD AS A SYMBOL OF COURSE WORK KINDLY MAKE IT FUN TO THEM SO THAT THEY GROW LOVING IT. AND ADDITION TO SCHOOLS, KINDLY THE HEADS INVEST MUCH IN YOUR TEACHERS, TUTORS AND MORE TO ELEVATE THE SYSTEMS WITH FACTS OF THE FIELDS BECAUSE MANY EXPERIENCE THEM THEORETICALLY THAN PRACTICALLY. UGANDA AS A COUNTRY IS OURS AND NO ONE WILL LOVE IT MORE THAN US. LETS SUPPORT THE DOMESTIC TRIP/ TOUR PACKAGES PLEASE

    Hello [CanineSafaris]
    Your thoughts on Low Turn of Domestic Tourism in Uganda are right and recognized especially issue concerning the pandemic covid-19. Maybe to contribute on this, According to me, Low Turn of Domestic Tourism in Uganda 🇺🇬 has also been due to;

    1. Limited awareness and promotion as most local communities aren’t aware of the available tourist attractions within our country . However, thanks to companies like CanineSafaris which has potentially and knowledgeable staff to help market these attractions inform of business and this has helped to promote domestic Tourism on the other hand since people in rural areas lack the marketing skills.
    2. I think poor infrastructure like unaccessible areas with poor roads hindering transportation and experiencing these attractions in domestic Tourism view thus making it hard to discover.
    3. Another point can be absence of facilities such as accomodation and other tourism-related services. I think this requires government to invest in much to attract more domestic tourists that is investing in private sectors.
    4. To add on, high costs have also led to Low Turn of Domestic Tourism on side of low income earners as we know the
Low wages and salaries paid to people yet people are in hunt for affordable accommodation options which are less.
    5. Security concerns also can be one of hindering domestic Tourism as this affects international tourists too. This can be addressed to gov’t to ensure safety of domestic tourists countrywide.
    6. Allow me conclude with issue of limited activities and amenities too as there need to be interesting activities to boost domestic turn up. These can be solved by local people being creative and discovering new activities to help reduce on Low Turn of Domestic Tourism.

Thanks You and Long live…[Canine Safaris 🙏]

Thanks for detailed comment Mr.Ibrahim. We humbly appreciate your contribution towards domestic tourism. For the case of campaigns and promotions among domestic tourists, Ministry of Tourism and her sister agencies have been organizing campaigns recently to boost domestic tourism numbers, attached is the link to the article on our blog section (https://caninesafarisug.com/2023/04/17/discover-the-wonders-of-west-taking-part-in-the-explore-west-domestic-tourism-campaign/). When it comes to the case of high costs, technologies in the tourism industry are currently developed to enable domestic tourists save and plan for travel. For the case of low wages, its a private based concern which ultimately may not be easy to address since the facilities are privately owned.
